Things to See and Do in Edinburgh


Edinburgh Castle
This famous castle dominates Edinburgh and gives stunning views of the city and surrounding countryside. St Margaret's Chapel, Mons Meg siege cannon, the Great Hall, the magnificently restored Laich Hall and the Scottish National War Memorial are here with the 'Honours of the Kingdom' exhibition tracing the history of Scotland's Crown Jewels. Vaults where foreign prisoners-of-war were held in the
wars of the 18th and 19th C are on show. Free audio tour is available inside the castle. Restaurant offering self and table service.

Edinburgh Dungeon
Visitors will find themselves transported into darker, more ominous times from the moment they step through the new attraction’s imposing Market Street entrance. The Dungeon depicts some of the sinister stories of Edinburgh’s history. Features include the Hall of Relics - a collection of grisly artefacts from Scotland’s blood-soaked past, amongst which a torture chamber displaying many of the hideous methods employed to inflict excruciating pain on bygone prisoners. One of the highlights of the exhibition is a journey by boat as visitors set sail on a witch-hunt at the command of James VI.

Edinburgh Tartan Weaving Mill
A genuine weaving mill producing tartan on traditional looms, with a variety of exhibitions and activities. See, hear and touch the story of weaving, learn to weave, accompany highland dress through the ages and photo taken in Scottish costume.

Edinburgh Zoo
Scotland's largest and most popular wildlife attraction. See over 1,000 animals - furry, feathery and scaly - from the tiny blue poison arrow frog to the massive white rhino. Discover the world's largest penguin pool (complete with underwater viewing), a fountain-filled maze and our exciting African Plains exhibit. Don't miss the famous penguin parade, March to October (weather permitting). Visit The Magic Forest,
home to our tiniest primates and take the safari bus to the hill top.

Georgian House
Edinburgh's New Town is known throughout the world and at its heart is Charlotte Square, Robert Adam's masterpiece of urban design. Three floors of no 7 Charlotte Square, the Georgian House, are furnished as they would have been around 1796. Visitors can see a fascinating array of china, silver, paintings and furniture, and downstairs, the kitchen and scullery. Video programmes on the history of the New Town and "A day in the life of the Georgian House" can be viewed, both lasting about 30 mins.

John Knox House
John Knox House, part of the Netherbow Centre, built by James Mossman, goldsmith to Mary Queen of Scots, is a prime example of a 16th century house, it takes its name from its association with Knox, who died shortly after moving in. The house holds an exhibition on the life and times of Knox and Mossman, displayed against the setting of this original house.

Our Dynamic Earth
Dynamic Earth is a fantastic journey that will take you from the very beginning of time to the unknown future of the planet we call home. Outlook Tower & Camera Obscura
Visit the Camera Obscura and Outlook Tower, Edinburgh's oldest attraction, for a uniquely entertaining experience. The magical 1850s Camera Obscura - darkened room - captures a live moving picture of the city. Have fun 'spying' on passers-by, or picking up cars and buses in the palm of a hand! The guide explains all, telling Edinburgh's story with humour and enthusiasm. Visitors will also be amazed at the 3-dimensional hologram display, the largest in Europe, plus 'Old Edinburgh' and pinhole photographs. Enjoy superb 360-degree views from the rooftop terrace.
